Seal Asphalt to protect your investment and to have a slate black color giving it a nice, clean look. Sealing Asphalt is an effective solution for Parking Areas, Walkways, Streets, Highways and anything Asphalt.
1. Protection:
- Tape or protect any cement retaining walls, walkways, garage doors, garage floor, etc. to be sure you do not get any asphalt sealer on things you don’t want to. (It is the same as painting. You protect the carpet, light switches and so on so make sure you do the same with the surroundings of your asphalt surface).
2. Applying the Asphalt Sealer:
- Mix the acrylic or coal tar driveway sealer well before you start your job. This can be done with a drum mixer extension that can be attached to your drill. It is recommended mixing it once or twice again during the sealing process.
- Tip: If you are sealing by hand, you can mix a couple handfuls of silica sand to the asphalt sealer in the 5 gallon bucket to make coatings less slippery when wet, or to seal alligator cracks on the asphalt. If you are using a spray system, check its specs to see if it will spray sealer with sand (most won't.)
In the case that you are applying the sealer by hand:
- Pour a 1-ft. wide ribbon of sealer across the driveway.
- Push and pull the sealer with your tool (squeegee or brush) to spread it until it is about 3 or 4 ft. wide and continue working the sealer down the driveway.
- Remember, it is just like painting a wall but instead you are pouring the sealer on the driveway NOT in a paint tray.
- Paint the surface from top to bottom.
In the case that you are applying the sealer with a spray system:
- Do your edging (3 to 4 feet) using a finer tip nozzle on the spray system (5 different tips/nozzles are included with your system).
- Once all of your edging is done, replace your tip on the sealcoating spray system to a wider, higher volume nozzle and begin to spray your sealer from left to right or right to left, all the way down the surface towards the finishing point.
- A spray system will save you a tremendous amount of time and effort.
- You can typically finish a job four times more quickly when using a spray system.

3. Finish Sealing Process:
When sealcoating by hand:
- Using the brush, pull the sealer toward you and apply enough pressure to remove all excess sealer.
- Repeat this process down the driveway.
- Tip: Two thin coats are better than one thick coat. Allow the first coat to dry for 12 hours before applying your second coat.
4. Drying Time:
- Block the end of your driveway or asphalt area with a caution ribbon or tape to keep cars and people off until it is completely dry.
- Let area dry for 3-4 hours before walking on.
- Let area dry for 6-8 hours before allowing cars to drive on.
