Spraying Asphalt Sealer Neatly

by Ken Campbell
(Burlington, Ontario)

Hello Everyone,

I am new to the business and thought you might share some tips with me on the proper cutting in techniques you employ. Below is a list of problems I am encountering and wondering if you can help us out?

1) Backer Board works great if it is backed up to a wall, or in a crack. However if the backer board sits flush on the asphalt the sealer will blow right under the board and leave 2-4 inches of sealer on the sidewalk.

2) A very common drive we are encountering are ones with new asphalt ( flush with the sidewalk) or patterned interlocking bricks ( flush with the asphalt) Backer board doesn't leave a clean line, so do you tape the sidewalks or paving stones prior to spraying? Are you taping and using a squeegee on the edges?

3) Do you use a combination of masking tape and kraft paper to mask off curbs, paving stones, sidewalks etc.?

We have tried and can do a line of sealer with the sprayer with the backer board however if the backer board sits flush on the asphalt it blows under it leaving a very poor line.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks,
Ken

Backing Board Problems
by: Anonymous

Ken,
Try using a 6" broom and a 5 gallon bucket to do your edging. This is quick, easy, and very effective.

Spraying a Clean Line or Edge
by: Judd Burdon

Hello Ken,

Sounds like your spray wand is too close to the asphalt surface. Hold the tip higher off the ground to reduce the amount of pressure on impact. The tip is too close to the asphalt which essentially blows the sealer under the board. The sealcoating trigger wand allows you to spray sealer at various speeds as well. Reduce the pressure on the handle to create a smaller fan spray and make sure that spray tip is high enough off the ground so that the sealer is not blowing under.

If you can't spray a clean line along the road or sidewalk (I know that it can be done as I can do it as well as others) however, if you can't the best thing to do is use a 12 inch wide masking tape or cardboard that unfolds 6 to 10 feet.
