Part 4: Cleanup and Maintaining Your Traffic Marking Equipment

Cleaning up the Job Site

After finishing every job it is necessary to clean up and leave your job site looking complete and professional.

Completing the following steps will not only please your clients but allow you to leave your mark on your work, showing perspective clients and anyone who walks or drives by who did such a wonderful line striping job.

A) Make sure the job site is spotless: Remember that this traffic marking job that you have completed is really the marketing show piece that all the neighbours will see. You want the street to be clean, grass edges, walkways, etc.

B) Hammer two 3 foot sticks into each end of the entrance to the parking lot and tie your attention ribbon across the area to barricade the lot, preventing anyone from walking across the wet surface.

C) Fliers/Brochures: Staple 3 fliers to the attention ribbon with your company name and that you provide free estimates so people can get your number as they are walking by.

Maintaining your Traffic Marking Equipment

It is extremely important to clean and maintain your Line Striping Equipment. When you make an investment in line painting equipment you will want to keep it running efficiently and reliably.

Follow these steps and the investment you made in your equipment will be a long term one.

Cleaning out your pump:
  • Unplug your sprayer before cleaning the exterior with solvent.
  • When using latex products, clean with hot soapy water.
  • When using oil based products, clean with mineral spirits.
  • When flushing the pump use Liquid Shield.
Maintaining your paint sprayer:
  • Release the pressure through the gun, not the pump.
  • Clean out your paint sprayer after each use.
  • Clean your filters (Manifold filter, Gun filter, and Inlet filter).
  • Use Piston Lube before each use.
  • Winterize your paint sprayer using Liquid Shield.
  • Never use your paint sprayer if it is frozen.
  • Repack your spray unit annually or every 1500-2000 gallons.
  • Replace your tip every 100 gallons.
  • Use one sprayer for Latex and another one for Oil based products.
Safety Issues:
  • Always use the gun trigger safety lock.
  • Always depressurize your line striping unit when you are not spraying.
Changing a paint reservoir on a traffic marking machine:

Often, a job requires two different colors of paint. Therefore it is important to learn how to change a paint reservoir. If you do not properly do this, the second paint color will mix with the first and leave you with wasted paint. This costs you time and money.

If you are using oil based paint, you will need to empty the reservoir and clean your machine with a solvent based chemical solution. Run it through your machine until you can’t see any color.

If you are using a water based paint, simply flush the system with water until all the color has been flushed out. Clean the reservoir the same way. Fill reservoir with new color paint.

As mentioned above, use two different spray guns if you are using both Latex and Oil based products.
