Hi, I’m Judd Burdon, President and CEO of Asphalt Kingdom. I was 18 years old when I got into the world of asphalt.
When I finished high school I knew that college wasn’t for me. The books bored me to death and I wanted to get out into the real world and do something…but what?
The first job I got was working with autistic children. It was a great experience and really enjoyed the experience. It was personally rewarding, but I could barely pay the bills.
By chance, an opportunity came along. I got a part time job selling for a paving company that does driveways. It didn’t take me long to figure that if these guys were willing to pay me a 20% commission on all my sales that there was some real serious money in this business. I was selling over $5,000 a week! I was 18 years old and making a cool $1K per week from commissions.
I got together with my dad and told him what I was doing and asked him what he thought of it. He quizzed me about a few things and then he asked me, “Why aren’t you selling for yourself?”
That’s all I needed to hear. I borrowed $5K from my dad so I could buy my own driveway sealing equipment. I had to figure it all out by myself – no website was out there that gave you all the answers like the Asphalt Kingdom website. Finding the right asphalt sealer application equipment and the right asphalt sealer products was not easy, but more about that later on.
The first thing I did was buy a trailer for my old diesel Jetta. Then I bought a pressure sprayer, a 45 gallon drum with liquid asphalt sealer, and asphalt crack filler. Off I went, selling door to door for myself.
I was 18 and I was making $500-$750 a day with sealcoating.
At the end of an 8-hour day I had sold and completed between 5 and 10 driveways at the average price of $150. I couldn’t believe it. I was 18, with basically no professional sales and marketing experience, yet I was able to make $500-$750 per day. As each asphalt season in Montreal rolled by, I was able to reinvest and buy better and larger equipment to increase productivity and add value to sales until I was operating a full paving crew and two asphalt maintenance crews. Everything I know about asphalt has come from trial and error.
Eventually I saw the need to start AsphaltKingdom.com to show other people how easy it can be to make money for yourself, to be your own boss, to work outside and to take satisfaction in doing a job right. I put together a team of other experts in the field of asphalt maintenance, and together we created AsphaltKingdom.com.
