Crack Filling Equipment: What Exactly Do You Need?
Crack filling equipment can be as simple as using cold crack filler and a squeegee for the DIY crowd, or it can be as involved as you need it to be for your crack filling business. Here’s the skinny on what tools you need to get the job done right.
- Clean And Prep – You must clean out the damaged area, removing all loose debris and weeds. A screwdriver will suit a single driveway just fine, but for a contractor or property maintenance professional, the ultimate in productivity is a heat lance or a Billy Goat Grazor which make this work a snap. If you use a pressure washer, make sure the area is completely dry before doing the crack repair.
- Melter – This is a must-have in crack filling equipment when using hot pour rubberized crack filler. Any cracks that are wider than a half inch need this instead of cold pour. This is where a crack filling business should be doing the work instead of attempting a DIY crack repair.
- Applicator – Here the range in tools is huge! From a simple pour pot all the way up to a 2-in-1 melter applicator that will heat, apply, and smooth the hot pour.
- Sandliner – Rubberized crack filler is far more stable and durable when sand is added. Your crack filling business can get the job done fast and professionally with a Sandliner.
No matter who you are, a homeowner or an asphalt professional, there are three tools you must have to do a crack repair. You need to have a way to clean and prep the damaged area, a melter for heating hot pour filler, and an applicator to fill the fracture.
Asphalt crack repair equipment for starting your business can be overwhelming. There are so many choices out there. You need to know what machines and tools are the best for your plans, and what will be the most profitable. Let’s take a look at what’s what when it comes to equipment for repairing cracks.
Hot Pour Crack Filler is hands down your bread and butter in this business. Any Handy Andy can use cold pour crack filler, and won’t want to pay you to do it for them. The thing with hot pour is you need two things; a way to heat it and a way to apply it. This is why you need asphalt crack repair equipment.
Melters are designed to heat up the blocks of hot pour crack filler, and keep it hot, so that it’s ready-to-use in equipment for repairing cracks. Look for a size that suits your needs. You want enough capacity that you can do the job, but not so much that it’s a waste for your business needs. Be sure to get one with an agitator handle so you can keep the pour stirred. Always keep in mind how this will fit in your truck, too. No sense in buying bigger, thinking its better, only to discover you can’t get it to the job site.
Applicators come in a wide variety of usefulness. From the simplest of pour pots to wheeled equipment for repairing cracks, it’s all a matter of what’s best for your needs. Pour pots are fairly inexpensive and easy to use, but not as quick as using a wheeled applicator. If you’re looking at working quickly, make sure the applicator has got a scraper to smooth as you go.
2-In-1 Asphalt Crack Repair Equipment is the best of both worlds. It will heat the hot pour crack filler and act as the applicator as well. What makes this truly useful is the product stays hot while you work. Now before you go crossing melter off your list, remember, you may still want a melter to have hot pour ready to go at all times with no waiting. If you plan on handling parking lots, or doing multiple driveways a day it will save you a lot of time.
Other Equipment For Repairing Cracks: There is more to consider adding to your list of asphalt crack repair equipment. You have a way to heat and apply the hot pour crack filler, but, what about cleaning the cracks in the first place? For success you need to get down in there and remove debris and weeds, and sure enough, there’s a machine you can buy to do that for you. It all depends on how much you want to save on time, versus spending money on tools.
Equipment for repairing cracks is a must if you intend on using hot pour crack filler in your business. Really, that’s where the money is in this business. The Handy Andy crowd are fully capable of using the cold pour themselves. Decide on what makes the most sense for your business to melt and apply the crack filler. Consider what a crack cleaning machine can do to save you time, and whether it’s worth it to you. Now you know exactly what asphalt crack repair equipment you need to start your own business.
Repair Asphalt Cracks: Choosing the Best Crack Filler Machine and Supplies
If you’re a homeowner looking to repair cracks in your home, or you’re a contractor looking to earn a dollar per linear foot, you’re on the right page. Not only will you discover how to fill cracks properly, but you’ll also learn more about the best supplies and equipment needed to get the job done right.
How to Repair Asphalt Cracks the Right Way!
Cracks in asphalt are the worst offender when it comes to damaging asphalt surfaces. If left untreated, they’ll continue to grow, and eventually, you’ll have to replace the entire surface. We know how costly that can be. A total repaving could cost you up to $10,000.
To make sure you fill cracks the right way, there are two things that you need to do:
You must clean out the cracks. Remove all vegetation, dirt, and debris, and make sure that the sidewalls of the crack are completely clean.
There are many ways to clean your asphalt for crack repair. For example, you can use a wire brush to remove dirt and debris from asphalt cracks. You can also use a scraper for cracks that are extra deep or that have loosed pieces of asphalt.
- You must apply a direct hot pour rubberized crack filler in the crack. A lot of those liquid pour crack fillers that you see in hardware stores don’t work well because they are in liquid form and don't have a rubber base.
And the great thing is we have professionally engineered crack seal machines that will literally melt and apply crack filler at walking speed.

|You need to apply it by hand.
Use a U-shaped or a V-shaped squeegee to go over the top of the crack and smooth it out so it looks aesthetically smooth
|You can pour it in a pour pot and apply it by hand or you could buy an all-inclusive machine called a hot pour melter applicator.
[A hot pour melter applicator is a two-in-one. It melts down the crack filler like a kettle would, and then it also applies it in a pushing style like a lawnmower or shopping cart. ]
|Cold pour are usually acrylic water-based products||Rubber-based with adhesive materials added to give it tackiness. That way, it’ll surely stick and bond to the sidewalls of the cracks.|
|Generally used in the residential market||Used in residential and commercial tasks by professionals for driveways, parking lots, roadways, racetracks, and so on.|

RY10 Crack Repair Machine versus the Competitors’ Units
We actually ended up ordering one of the other guy’s units to do some comparison testing with the RY10. And here are some of the discoveries we’ve made. Read the table below to learn more.
|The Competitors’ Units||RY10 Crack Repair Machine|
|Warps over time because of their thin steel walls. They end up getting very hot and start to push out on the outer areas of the melter.||It’s built with 12-gauge steel. Even if we heat it up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, we’re never concerned about the welds cracking.|
|Their wheels make squeaking sounds.||It has nickel bronze bushing that’s down on the wheels right on the axles. Hence, the wheels don’t wobble or wear out when you’re working with it. It’s also well lubricated so there are no squeaking sounds.|
|You’ll need to stand above the unit to agitate the filler yourself. When you look down, you’ll notice that all the fumes of the crack filler are hitting you right in the face. It’s not good for your health.||The RY10 has on-the-fly agitation. That means you can agitate your material while you’re pushing the unit. No more inhaling the fumes for you.|
|They don’t have a reset button for adjustments needed on the temperature gauge. Their unit arrived with the glass pane completely smashed and not working.||The RY10 has a high-quality temperature gauge on top that is built to last. There’s also a reset button on the back of it for adjustments.|
|When exposed to high temperatures, the propane bottle of your crack filler could heat up and be significantly dangerous. But the propane bottles of the competitors were resting up against the edge of the kettle that’s 300-400 degrees Fahrenheit. That is not safe.||The RY10 has a three quarter inch shield between the propane bottle and the main kettle. That means you don’t need to worry about the propane bottle heating up and causing injury to you or the people around you.|
|Their hoses are roughly less than half the length of RY10. It’s going to make burning out the vegetation in cracks difficult for you.||It’s designed to have a torch that has a long hose with a regulator that plugs into the propane bottle. That means when you need to burn some vegetation out of cracks, you just pull out the torch. With the RY10 you’ll get a significant length of the hose to work with.|
|Their unit uses a thin coat of paint that’s going to rust. When their unit arrived, it was all rusty inside because water had been in there after their water testing. All the welds were rusty.||Our RY10 Crack Repair Machine is double powder-coated inside. That means your paint is going to protect it from serious chipping and so on.|
Don’t take our word for it. Our clients purchased their crack filler supplies and crack filling equipment from us, and they love the machine.
How to Use an Asphalt Crack Filling Machine
How to use a crack filling machine? There are 6 tips you need to know on how to use your push melter applicator in order to maximize its full efficiency.
- Tip #1 - Control your machine's temperature. Once it reaches 350°F, the rubber blocks are completely melted. Make sure to turn down the regulator to prevent it from crystallizing.
- Tip #2 - Practice the proper way to load the crack filler into your machine. Make sure to wear safety gloves before loading the machine. You can load it from the front or the side of your machine. The good thing about our RY10 lineup is it has an inside slope to make sure your rubber blocks will lean toward the valving system.
- Tip# 3 - Limit the material to what you need. The RY10's narrow shoe will limit the crack fill that will be applied on the surface. Just make sure not to overfill your shoe to avoid wasting crack filler.
- Tip# 4 - Have a Tiger torch and an asphalt crack squeegee handy. You can use the Tiger torch to clean your machine, burn down vegetation, and heat up the valving system in case a blockage occurs. The asphalt crack squeegee can be used to spread out puddles of crack filler that can't be evened out by your machine.
- Tip #5 - Choose the right crack filler. There are 3 kinds of crack sealers in the market: liquid crack filler, rubberized direct fire crack filler, and oil-jacketed crack filler. Check out the table below to see their differences.
|Type of Crack Filler||Description|
|Liquid crack filler||Ideal for homeowners with a minimal amount of cracks on their asphalt driveway.|
|Rubberized crack filler||The most popular in the market: Big property owners, churches, airports, and contractors use direct fire crack filler for repairing their asphalt cracks.|
|Oil-jacketed crack filler||Used by municipalities for miles and miles of crack sealing community roads|
- Tip #6 - Perform the most efficient way to fill cracks, we call it the Conga line. You have your crack cleaning person in the front cleaning out the crack from debris and vegetation, followed by the blower man blowing the dirt debris and vegetation out from the surface, and finally, the crack melter applicator filling the cracks watertight completing the process of crack sealing.
