How to Know If You Need to Prime an Oil Spot
Oil spots are one of the biggest reasons sealcoat fails. Even with a high-performance sprayer like the AirBoss 575, sealant won’t stick to contaminated asphalt. Here’s how to run a quick test before you spray:
- Step 1: Use a house key or flat-head screwdriver to press into the oil-stained area.
- Step 2: Drag the tool across the spot and check for softness or residue.
If the asphalt is soft or you see a greasy smear on your tool, the oil has penetrated too deep—cut and patch the area first. If the surface feels firm and the stain is only on top, pressure wash with hot water and degreaser. Once dry, apply Oxi-Bond Primer to lock in the spot before sealing.
This fast check can save you from callbacks and rework, making sure your sealer bonds tight and lasts longer—even in heavy-traffic areas.
