How to Know If You Can Seal Over Oil Spots – The Key Test
Before you load up your AK Pro Sealcoating Trailer System and head to the jobsite, make sure your asphalt is ready for sealing—especially if oil spots are present. Sealer won’t properly adhere to oil-saturated surfaces, and skipping this step can cost you in callbacks and rework.
Here’s how to run the Key Test:
Take a metal key or screwdriver and press it into the oil-stained spot on the asphalt.
- If the tool sinks in easily: The oil has weakened the asphalt. This section must be cut out and patched before sealing.
- If the asphalt remains solid: The oil hasn’t penetrated deeply. You can hot pressure wash the area with water and a degreasing chemical, let it dry thoroughly, then apply Oxi-Bond Primer to lock down the surface and ensure proper sealer adhesion.
