The RY2X2 Infrared Asphalt Heater is easy to use. Simply place it over the distressed asphalt point, light the self-contained burner, and in as little as five to 10 minutes, this heater will have the asphalt brought back to its original mixing temperature. Remove the machine, rake the asphalt into place, compact the asphalt with a vibrating plate or plate compactor, and you're all done!
In the past, you'd have to drive to the asphalt plant, buy new asphalt, dig up the old asphalt, replace it, and then figure out where to dispose of the old asphalt . . . all of those steps are eliminated now! Just wheel the portable infrared asphalt heater into place, light it, and you're halfway done! The unit weighs just 90lbs and features heat-shielded caster wheels, so you can operate it with just one person – no crew needed to move it around.
This infrared asphalt repair equipment is built to last: the frame is 11 gauge steel, and the stainless steel and ceramic heater cartridge has an average lifespan of 1,500 hours.

- Press a key or screwdriver into the area in question.
- If it sinks in or feels soft: The asphalt is compromised. Heat won’t restore it. You’ll need to remove and patch instead.
- If it stays solid: Clean thoroughly with a hot water pressure washer or degreaser, and you’re good to go with the R3 for reheating and reworking.

A full 20 lb propane tank typically lasts about 8 hours on the R2, 5 hours on the R3, and 4 hours on the R4. Actual run time can vary depending on heat intensity and ambient temperature.
Yes. You can use an infrared asphalt heater over areas with existing repairs, including hot-pour rubberized crack filler and cold patch.
Make sure to remove and discard any melted rubber crack filler before placing your patch. Melted crack filler can create instability in the repair and reduce patch performance.
If the repair area is larger than your infrared heater’s square-foot coverage, you will need to do multiple presses. Each press typically takes about 7 minutes, depending on ambient temperature. You can overlap each press by about 4 inches to ensure consistent heat across the seam.
When adding new asphalt or millings, build it about 1/2 inch higher than the surrounding aged asphalt. After compacting and tamping, the repaired area should finish flush with the existing surface.
Place the torch underneath the stainless steel skirt. Ensure the torch is not directed at the ceramic surface.
A propane tank can freeze in cold weather because the liquid inside needs heat from the surrounding air to vaporize into gas. If it’s too cold outside or the tank is too low, it may not produce enough pressure to run your equipment.
Heat time can be as short as about 10 minutes, depending on the age of the asphalt, how clean the surface is, and the ambient temperature. Colder conditions typically require more time to soften the asphalt.
To avoid burning the surface and help the heat penetrate deeper, run the heater in two stages:
- High PSI: 26 to 35 PSI for 5 to 8 minutes
- Low PSI: 15 to 25 PSI for 5 to 8 minutes
