Navigating the Asphalt Crack Filler Store

When I started out in asphalt maintenance, I loved finding cracks in pavement. Asphalt crack filling is one of the most important - and profitable - things you can do.

If you don't fill cracks before you sealcoat, then water can trickle under the pavement. It eats away at the foundation, which leads to potholes and or depressions.

Whether you're looking to make money (about $1.25 a linear foot) or save money (it costs you about 20 cents a linear foot), asphalt crack repair is an in-demand asphalt maintenance service.

What Should You Use to Fill Cracks?

There are three primary asphalt crack fillers:

  • cold pour crack filler
  • Hot rubberized crack filler
  • mastic

To repair cracks on your driveway, you can use a liquid driveway crack filler. If the crack is up to 1/2" in depth and up to 2" wide, I strongly recommend you go for a hot pour crack filler. It lasts a lot longer than the cold pour option. For large parking lots or roadways, mastic crack filler is your best option.

Liquid Crack Filler

Liquid crack fill has a consistency that resembles thick pancake batter and has a black-brown color.

Liquid asphalt crack filler is easy to apply. Simply unscrew the cap and replace it with the pointed plastic tip. Cut the tip and squeeze the contents of the bottle into the cracks in the asphalt. For a pro finish, push the material into the crack using a U-shaped or V-shaped squeegee.

Hot Pour Rubberized Crack Fill

Asphalt cracks wider than 1/2" require a tougher and longer-lasting product, such as hot-pour rubberized crack fill

This driveway repair product comes in large cubes that you melt in a crack-filling machine. Once the block is melted, you apply it using a melter-applicator or a pour pot. For years, I've recommended the RY10 Pro machine for crack filling. Here's a picture of me with it at the National Pavement Expo way back in 2017! If you're in charge of a parking lot of any size, this is your best option. If you're a contractor, it's a no-brainer.

Large Asphalt Cracks

Large asphalt cracks over 2" wide are signs that the pavement has been neglected for too long or was badly paved to begin with.

You'll want to look at mastic asphalt repair in this case.

Specialty Crack Filler: Alligator Cracking

Alligator cracks (also known as crocodile cracking) are characterized by narrow and shallow cracks that look a lot like spiderwebs.

They can show up just about anywhere on a driveway or parking lot. But they usually show up in places where water pools. Crocodile cracks also form on the outer corners of a driveway's apron.

To fix this kind of asphalt crack, you can use Gator Patch. Gator Patch is an asphalt crack filler product that has a mud-like consistency and is spreadable.

This crack filler gets into those small cracks and fills them to create a tough, waterproof seal. Sealed cracks extend a pavement's lifespan by up to 20 years!

Gator Patch is so easy to use that anyone can do it. Just pour the product onto the cracks, spread it using an asphalt squeegee, and let it dry. Curing time is fast!

How to Apply Asphalt Crack Filler

I recommend you choose the application method depending on what type of asphalt crack filler you’re using.

A U or V squeegee is used to fill cracks with liquid crack fill. You can also use a pour pot bander to apply this type of crack filler.

If you’re applying hot rubber crack fill, you can use a melter kettle to liquefy a cube of crack sealer. You can apply it using a crack pour pot or a pour pot bander. Asphalt crack filler can also be melted inside a high-capacity melter oven.

That's why we recommend that you use a portable crack-filling machine to melt and apply crack filler. I've tested a wide range of crack-filling machines that suit every property owner and contractor’s needs. See them in our crack-filling equipment store.

Melt and apply crack filler for asphalt. Load the cube inside the machine. Wait for the temperature to reach 350°F.

Once the regulator exceeds 350°F, turn it down. This will prevent the hot rubber asphalt crack filler from crystallizing. If it crystallizes, it will become unusable.

Next, apply asphalt crack repair material efficiently using the “Conga Line method.”

In this method, one of your crew will perform surface prep. He will then be followed by the leaf blower operator.

Once the surface prep and cleaning crew are done, they will be followed by the crack-filling machine operator.

Asphalt Crack Filling Calculator

An image of blacktop crack filler placed over a roadUse our Crack Sealer Calculator to estimate quantities based on the total linear feet of cracks that you need to seal.

If you're having trouble measuring the cracks, we use a simple trick: measure 10% of your parking lot and then multiply it out from there. Saves a lot of time and work if 100% accuracy is not your goal!

Frequently Asked Question

What is best to fill asphalt cracks?

The best asphalt crack filler depends on the size of the crack and the type of project you’re working on. You can fill asphalt cracks up to ½ inch wide using liquid cold-pour blacktop crack filler. For larger projects, a hot rubberized crack filler is the best solution.

How long does an asphalt crack sealer last?

The higher quality product you buy, the longer it typically lasts. Applying the material correctly is also a factor in how your work lasts. Typically, it will last anywhere from a few years up to 10 years. Hot-pour sealers typically last longer than cold-pour versions, especially in high-traffic areas.

What’s the difference between hot and cold asphalt crack sealers?

Cold crack fillers are typically easier to apply. They’re also best for small-scale jobs. Hot asphalt crack repair material must be melted before applying, making it better suited to large-scale projects.
