However, it's always nice to have some water handy to wipe off any sealer or residue from your skin, hands, or commercial sealcoating supplies.

What Are the Best Homeowners' Asphalt Sealing Tools?

If you want to keep asphalt looking clean and in good condition, it must be sealed on a regular basis to prevent the onset of decay and cracking. This process does not happen overnight, but as everyone knows, asphalt is very black when it is first laid. Over time, it turns greyish in color. This graying process is called "oxidization". The asphalt liquids have been cooked out, leaving only dried-out tar and bitumen on the surface.

If you have a brand-new asphalt surface, you have a major advantage, as it has not been oxidized and dried out YET! It is time for commercial sealcoating for asphalt — but make sure to use an excellent asphalt sealer before it grays and dries out!

If you have an old asphalt surface that is grey and dried out, it is still important to protect it from the elements. If you don't do it now, it will ONLY get drier and more fragile, needing replacing before that of a sealcoated driveway.

Remember to mix or shake it well before application. The consistency of the asphalt sealer should look thick. How Much Would Different Sealcoating Supplies’ Sizes Cover?

Asphalt sealer comes in a variety of different packaging options. It comes in 5-gallon pails, 55-gallon drums, 275-gallon totes, and bulk deliveries.

Coverage is highly dependent on how you are applying the sealer. Using a brush or squeegee uses more sealer, as it creates a semi-thick layer that spreads into the tiny cracks in the pavement. With sealcoat spraying, an even spray applies the sealer across the pavement, and it uses less material.

Another factor in sealcoating supply coverage is the age of the asphalt. Older oxidized asphalt will absorb sealer like it's trying to rehydrate after drying out in the sun. Newer asphalt that's still black won't need to absorb the sealer, so you will use less of it in sealcoating.

Some asphalt sealants also come in concentrated form, meaning you can add water to dilute them and get more coverage. Asphalt emulsion sealers and some specific sealers may need to be used as-is because their formulas are ready-to-use or can have negative effects if any additives or water are added. Always check the label or manufacturer's description to see whether you can add water or additives.

How Do I Use a Sealcoat Sprayer Machine?

A sprayer machine can be a very powerful type of sealcoating equipment. I have a video from about 10 years ago where I showed how you can sealcoat a driveway in under eight minutes.

Now, when you're spraying sealer, you'll want to protect all the borders first. Cut any grass that overhangs the asphalt so it doesn't interfere with the spray. Do all your trim work by sealing along the edges. You can either do this with your sprayer very carefully or manually with a brush. It's no different than painting a wall.

Do all the cutting work first, and then do the main body. You'll be fast as a flash. A sealcoating and spraying system can literally spray along the edges as somebody is holding a board or a 1/8 sheet of plywood, or you can get a hold of one of our awesome sealcoat edgers that attach to the gun and spray all the edges protecting it at walking speed, as a one-person show.

So when you're spraying sealer, just remember to overlap halfway on top of your original pattern and then back the same way, basically doing two thin coats in one.

How do I properly apply asphalt sealer?

If you're applying the sealer by hand, go ahead and take five-gallon pails, or if you're pouring out of one of your spraying systems, pour puddles of it, and literally squeegee and brush it back towards you, making sure you get an even coat. Don't leave a lot of excess sealer out because it's susceptible to drying out in the sun and cracking on that surface. So, make sure to squeegee and rack properly.

We do advise sealing with spray systems. You'll always have the best outcome with this type of commercial sealcoating equipment.

Identifying whether or not you need one or two coats of sealer is really quite easy. If you need one coat, it's because the asphalt was just recently paved or sealed.

How many coats of sealcoating material to use?

If you need two coats, it's because the asphalt's extremely porous, gray and aged. At this point, we recommend applying one coat of sealer, allowing it to dry for at least 24 hours, and then applying a second coat. That way, you're sure to put down a proper application of sealer, protecting that asphalt investment. Two coats can also be used on highly trafficked areas such as parking lots.

Sealcoating takes a little bit of practice, but once you've got this aspect of commercial sealcoating down after a few hours, it's really easy to do.
